The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters Francisco Goya, Spanish painter of the era of romanticism
This caricature was created in the year 1797/1799 for the Diario de Madrid. It's Nr. 43 of 80 caricatures from the collection Los Caprichos. It was Goya's artistic experiment and a medium for his condemnation of the universal follies and foolishness in the Spanish society in which he lived. The images expose ignorance of the ruling class, pedagogical short-comings and the decline of rationality. The whole personal manifesto and position in art of Goya is a criticism of political, social and religious abuses of that time of period of the Spanish Society, and also reflects on the enlightement. It is important in our age, actually in every age, to reflect on society and also the authorities, and to question their decisions.
